Most teenagers nowadays prefer being involved in entrepreneurs or self-employment as their future careers rather than just being employed.
According to research from Junior Achievement and Brian Hamilton Foundation, there are around 660 out of 1000 (66%) of the respondents who are teenagers are still showing high interest to become entrepreneurs as adults in the future, despite the Covid-19 pandemic having a high impact on the business community in 2020.

During the Covid-19 pandemic in Malaysia, self-employment and entrepreneur had been the most affected type of jobs, and the percentage share of own-account workers declined around 0.7 percentage points that recorded 2.44 million people for the Fourth Quarter (Q4) 2020 in Principal statistics of Labour Forces.
Teh Siu Chen, 22, had started his self-employed business that related to video production that named Lighthouse Picture after his graduation from Han Chiang University College of Communication, Penang for his diploma in Mass Communication major in broadcasting.
“Experiences is the king”
“This ideology has been ingrained in my mind since I was a child, so I believe it is worthwhile for me to try this business because I believe that every successful person works hard to achieve their success, and I would like to stay on track with society. Aside from that, I believe I am the type of person who dislikes repeating the day with the same tasks, which make my day repetitive and meaningless day after day,” said Teh.
“Client is the hardest challenges for a fresh business since that there is quite a lot of the production house in this market so that most of the client I had are my relatives and due to some reasons, my connections are not very good that caused the difficulty for finding others client who is willing to trust,” said Teh.
Although it’s hard during this path, he also managed to improve his connections and realized that he had some shortcomings but he feels fortunate that have a partner to remedy those shortcomings in this business.

“Every path had its own difficulty, find the correct and suitable path, insist on the target and its might be the perfect ending in the future,” said Teh.
Teh said that teenagers might be more straightforward and want to become successful quickly but he suggested that pay more attention to relatives, friends, loved ones, and the most important own health.

“Don’t rush to get success but sometimes the slower you go, the more things you see and might be helping with discover more problems and to solve them quickly,” said Teh.

Lew Haw Wei, 21, chose to start his own business as a medical care product seller named v.kmart after the Covid-19 pandemic happened.
“Actually, it’s quite coincidental for the establishment of v.kmart because my friend had mentioned that he wanted to start up this business and I feel that the youth is wealth and would be a good chance for me to try this business,” said Lew.
Lew said that there are actually a lot of challenges to face after the establishment of v.kmart especially on the prices and advertising of medical products like pocket sanitizers.
“That is challenging after the government started to control the prices and advertising for this kind of products due to its related to Covid-19 that caused the prices are restricted and the advertisement to be banned in social media platforms such as Instagram and the product hard to sell to customers that stayed in others states in Malaysia,” said Lew.
The concept and way of thinking for self-employment differs from working for any employer, particularly in terms of the physical stress that comes with tasks from superiors. Self-employment and entrepreneurship, on the other hand, require the majority of the details in their business and may cause not only physical stress but also mental stress such as there are not really having any holiday or any rest day for self-employment and entrepreneur due to the business is counted on the owner.

“Experiences is really important before starting a business because that you can know how they managed their business. Other than that, I also suggested people who wanted to start a business as self-employment or entrepreneurship should use more time to focus on the business if might fall between two stools.”
