Coral reef as the ocean-climate solution
Coral reefs are the most biologically diverse systems in the ocean.

Glasgow, Scotland- An urgent investment for coral reef conservation had been called during the UN Climate Change Conference by Prime Minister of Fiji, Josaia V.Bainimarama.
“Coral reefs had been founded that it can thrive the ecosystem by doing what needs to be done to curb carbon emissions with good management of the good reefs by rebuilding the resilience of the reefs properly and responsibly,” said Prime Minister Bainimarama.
According to the 2020 Status of Coral Reefs of the World Report, there are 14% of the reefs had disappeared worldwide since 2009 due to disasters such as climate changes and some local impacts.
“This is 'Code Red' for our planet that should take actions to maintain healthy and resilient ocean to avoid loss of as much as 70% - 90% of corals by the end of the century if not taking any action,” said Ove Hoegh-Guldberg, a climate change expert and professor of marine studies at the University of Queensland.
Coral Phua, Coral Reef Rescue Initiative Lead at WWF said that bolstering the resilience of coral reefs with the strongest regeneration capacity and joining up those climate and ocean finance agendas, and driving significant private and public investments in nature-based solutions are the needs to help planets and also can bring benefits to the nature and people.
“Global Environment Facility (GEF) had recognized that safeguarding the ocean and coastal ecosystems and the shared resources within them demands that been deployed a Ridge to Reef Approach,” said Christian Severin, Coordinator, GEF International Waters, Senior Environment Specialist.
Karl Deering, Strategic Partnerships Lead at CARE International stated that human rights and good governance should be the center of the climate agenda by improved governance by allowing them to implement, monitor, and amplify interventions in coral reefs systems especially included youth and women.
